Proyecto Vitrina

Lip sync – seda y valor

FLORENCIA GUILLÉN

Installation view

A video diptych shows a woman singing at two harbors, one in the Philippines and the other in Mexico. The song cannot be heard but a series of drawings on silk as well as a linotype reveal the lyrics to the spectator. It is a sailor’s song that speaks of a colonial sea route between Mexico and the Philippines that ended in Spain; this route became the first and longest international commercial journey at that time.
Florencia Guillen’s piece points to objects that seek to symbolize identities as well as territories generated by the colonial cultural and by the economic exchange. The intention is to enable the viewer to sing along the woman at these two harbors, it is meant as an allegory to intercultural appropriations that we have unconsciously adopted to our everyday life.

PROYECTO VITRINA works as a showcase of collaborative projects between diverse artists and Arredondo \ Arozarena gallery. It is on view at Praga Street in Colonia Juarez, Mexico City.
